I was part of a friend’s surprise party. Everyone met at his house while he and his wife were out to dinner. She called when they left the restaurant.
We turned the lights off in the decorated rooms and waited in a giggly dark. A light came on again and someone decided to unscrew the entryway light so that Josh, the birthday boy, would have step farther into the room before we jumped out at him. We laughed some more when the lights went out.
A couple of noises had sounded like someone coming up the stairs, but they were false alarms. The tension and alcohol made every whispered comment a hilarious joke. It wasn’t until several minutes of this had passed until I started to wonder exactly how will Josh react? Would he jump and scream? Shrug a bit and look fake surprised? Would he run out the door?
Someone else was having the same thoughts and got to the same one that I did. In an almost unjoking, timid voice, someone asked “Does anyone know if Josh carries a gun?”
When preparing surprises, one should be prepared for surprises.
