I Know Four Things
After college I was confused by a lot of things. My religious, political and ethical judgement–all of my thoughts–had been put through the wringer. I decided to try to get my head together about what I knew.
I fortunately had a job for a while that was only four hours a day, and I had some time. It was time to codify everything I knew. I wasn’t interested in facts, or faith. I wanted to sort out what I positively knew and about which I could imagine no uncertainty.
The list never got longer than four things. I try to revisit them occasionally, and I just did–there’re still only four, and I’m touchy on the last one.
- I exist.
- I sense.
- I desire.
- Some sensations are what I desire. Others are not.
At bolder times, I’ve conclude that these together mean that something other than myself certainly exists. But I’d have to strictly believe that all things must have a cause, and I’m pretty far away from that.

thesis, antithesis, synthesis.
The very act of pondering it and trying to form something puts you in your Hegelian phase.
I think you’re just pissed off at your job.
